Focus and Scope
El-Suffah: Jurnal Studi Islam is an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes high-quality research, review articles, and scholarly commentaries in the field of Islamic Studies. The journal emphasizes contextual, interdisciplinary, and critical approaches to understanding Islam in contemporary Muslim societies, with particular attention to Southeast Asia and other developing regions.
The journal seeks to bridge classical Islamic scholarship and contemporary global issues, positioning itself as a platform for advancing dynamic, inclusive, and socially engaged Islamic thought.
The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:
1. Islamic Education and Human Development
This area explores Islamic education in relation to human development, including philosophy and thought of Islamic education, curriculum innovation, pesantren and madrasah studies, educational transformation, and the role of education in shaping ethical and intellectual Muslim societies.
2. Islamic Law, Society, and Contemporary Legal Issues
This covers Islamic law (fiqh and ushul fiqh) within social contexts, including legal pluralism, maqasid al-shariah, human rights discourse, gender justice, and the interaction between Islamic law and state legal systems in contemporary societies.
3. Qur’an, Hadith, and Contemporary Interpretation
This includes studies on Qur’an and Hadith with emphasis on contextual and critical approaches, such as thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu’i), hermeneutics, living Qur’an and Hadith, and their relevance in addressing modern societal challenges.
4. Islamic Thought, Theology, and Intellectual Tradition
This area encompasses classical and contemporary Islamic thought, including theology (kalam), philosophy, Sufism, and intellectual history, with a focus on renewal (tajdid), reform, and the development of moderate and inclusive Islamic perspectives.
5. Islam, Politics, Gender, and Social Dynamics
This includes the study of Islam in relation to power, politics, civil society, gender relations, identity, and cultural dynamics, particularly in Muslim societies facing globalization, democratization, and social transformation.
6. Islamic Economics and Social Transformation
This covers Islamic economics, finance, zakat, waqf, and their roles in promoting social justice, economic equality, and sustainable development within Muslim communities.
